Typing speed test

A timed test gives you three numbers: speed, accuracy and consistency. Reading them correctly is what tells you which of them to work on next.

What WPM measures

Words per minute, where a "word" is five characters including spaces. The convention is arbitrary but universal, which is what makes scores comparable between tests and between languages.

This test reports net WPM: only correct characters count. Typing fast and badly does not improve the number, because it is not really typing fast.

Accuracy and mistakes

Accuracy is the share of characters you got right first time. Going back to fix something still counts as a mistake, because the time is already spent. In practice, one error costs more than several slower keystrokes would have.

If accuracy is below 95%, slow down rather than pushing harder. It is almost always the fastest route to a higher WPM.

Consistency

Consistency shows how even your pace was across the test. A low figure usually means you flow through familiar words and stall on a few specific keys. When that is the pattern, drilling those keys does more than practising generally.

What the numbers mean

Typing speed reference points
SpeedLevelWhat it means
Under 20 wpmBeginnerStill looking down at the keyboard fairly often.
20 – 34 wpmDevelopingMost key positions are remembered.
35 – 49 wpmAverageThe usual range for everyday office work.
50 – 69 wpmGoodComfortable, without thinking about the keyboard.
70 – 89 wpmFastFaster than most people who use a computer daily.
90 wpm and aboveProfessionalProfessional typist territory.

Typing Vietnamese with accents produces a lower WPM than English for the same person, because each syllable needs more keystrokes. Compare results within one language.

Getting faster without picking up bad habits

  1. Hold accuracy above 95% before trying to go faster.
  2. Drill the keys you actually miss instead of repeating whole passages.
  3. Test weekly rather than daily. Progress needs time to become visible.
  4. Practise fifteen minutes a day instead of one long session.
  5. Stop when your hands get tired. Typing while tired only trains errors.

Take the test

One, two or five minutes, in English or Vietnamese. The text is shuffled every time so it cannot be memorised, and each result is saved so you can see the trend.

Frequently asked questions

What is WPM?
Words per minute, where a word is counted as five characters including spaces. Gõ Nhanh reports net WPM, meaning only the characters you got right are counted.
What is a good typing speed?
Around 35 to 50 words per minute is typical for office work. Above 70 is fast, and above 90 is professional typist territory.
How often should I test myself?
Once a week is enough to see progress. Testing daily tends to push people towards chasing speed at the cost of accuracy, which slows them down overall.
